We were delighted to be appointed by electrical retail giants 'Comet' in 2006 as energy consultants and to oversee Part L Building Regulations compliance for their huge renovation project to be rolled out across the UK.

Many stores would be doubling the floor space with the addition of a mezzanine floor and some stores would be new-build. The renovations would require consequential improvements under current Building Regulations, and Energy Building were responsible for providing a detailed report of services systems and efficiency, feasibility payback periods, U-Value standards, iSBEM calculations on new build and general advice on Mechanical, Electrical and Thermal issues. To date we have successfully carried out work on 50 stores and, with more to come, we look forward to continuing our successful partnership with one of the UK's household names in retail.
Kirtlington Park Estate dates back to the 18th century and was owned by the Dashwood Family until the late 1800's. In 1921 it was bought by the Budgett Family and remains in their ownership today.

It has always been a vibrant Estate, and never more so than during the 2nd World War when Slade Farm, the site of Kirtlington Business Centre, was used as an RAF airfield specialising in aircraft repair. After the war, the Slade Farm buildings reverted to agricultural use, initially housing pigs and turkeys, and then pedigree Fresian cows until the turn of the millennium.
The Estate has evolved as the pressures on the countryside have demanded, and creating a Business Centre out of the Farm Buildings was the next logical step for the family. Energy Building was appointed to provide a sustainable Mechanical and Electrical solution which included Ground Source Heat Pumps to 3 separate office suites, 26000 litres of Rainwater Harvesting, BMS and Passive Ventilation. The results are a beautiful collection of carefully restored buildings with cutting edge technology and extremely low-carbon footprints. The project is now complete and offices are being let as we go to print.
In early 2005, the green, low-carbon, sustainable agenda was not nearly the zeitgeist it is now. Targets on CO2 emissions from buildings had yet to be put into place and hadn't entered the vocabulary of developers and building control departments - wasn't dominating the daily news as it does today.

Hence, the pitch to Hull City Council to make proposed new-build '5th Avenue Primary School' a low-carbon, eco-friendly project faced that much more opposition than it would have if conceived today.
Contracted to Hull City Council, Energy Building, together with Ettridge Architecture began a consultation with Hull Property department on the scheme and, through attrition and grim determination, managed to prick a few ears up and gradually turn the design team onto a future-proof ideology for new public-owned properties. The premise, to construct a building which would more than surpass the soon-to-be mandatory Part L (2006) Building Regulations, and through the use of renewable technology, protect the building from rising fuel costs going forward. Our design features included a Ground Source Heat Pump, Wind Turbines, Passive Natural Ventilation in line with BB101, Dynamic Thermal Modelling to determine air flow and cooling effects of exposed thermal mass, Intelligent Lighting, a Building Energy Management System including sub-metering to lighting, power, heating and ancillary equipment. The school would have unprecedented insulation U-Values, sustainably sourced materials and utilise 'Passivent' Wind Catchers coupled with automatic ventilation louvers for secure, night-time cooling.
The school was completed in May 2008 and is now occupied. As a building, the list of sustainable design features today seem somewhat prosaic when viewed alongside the surge in this type of development, but we are still very proud of what we achieved and proud of Hull City Council for having the courage to take an early step into unchartered territory at the time.
Energy Building Ltd was appointed in August 2006 to provide detailed low-carbon engineering services design and PART L consultation on 16,000 square feet of architecturally striking, environmentally ambitious glass and steel shaded office suites, set within a Victorian walled garden deep in the heart of the English countryside.

Our brief from the outset was clear, to provide a discreet yet effective building services design which delivered on the triple bottom line of sustainability - the environment, the economy and the society. Three separate 2-storey office suites benefit from ground source heat pumps, exposed thermal mass coupled with automatic night-time cooling mechanisms, rain-water harvesting, intelligent lighting systems, a building energy management system collecting data on every fuel source consumed and end-use category performance. The site generates over 30% less CO2 than the government's own target emission rate set for these buildings and generates no local pollution at all.
This landmark project was officially opened by the Duke of Westminster on the 10th September 2008 and looks set to become a reference point for future standards in modern rural living.
Just off the beaten track, outside the sleepy village of Chirk in North Wales, lies Brynkinalt Estate. Brynkinalt has been the ancestral home of the Trevor Family since 924...

However the family can trace their heritage back to the marriage of Severa, daughter of the Roman Emperor, Maximus, who died in 388 and Gwrtheyrn Gwrtheneu (Vortigen), the 82nd King of Britain. With the changing role of country estates, the Trevor Family have refocussed the Brynkinalt Estate to ensure it retains a viable place in the nation's heritage.
Plans to develop a cluster of old farm buildings and disused rural landscapes lead to the appointment of Energy Building to work alongside Rural Solutions in creating a collection of desirable, environmentally conscious rural office suites to be called the Brynkinalt Business Centre. Dating back to the early 1800's, these heritage buildings were originally the Laundry, Sawmill and Dairy of Brynkinalt Hall. The development mission was to retain a sense of character and tradition, whilst offering all the amenities and comforts of a modern office development. Energy Building have been involved as the M & E consultants for this scheme from the outset and form part of a multi-disciplined team including Capita Symmonds, Econergy & Rural Solutions. The buildings all sit on a Bio-Mass district heating main and utilise underfloor heating, passive ventilation combined with external shading and low energy lighting. Energy Building have also had a watching brief during the construction of the project and, with completion imminent, we are thrilled to see the outstanding results of this unique and challenging project.
